I am directed by the Secretary of State for Foreign

Affairs to acknowledge the receipt of your letter

(3740/1916) of the 27th ultimo regarding the defence of

Shameen.

Sir E. Grey concurs in the opinion expressed by

Mr. Secretary Bonar Law that instructions should be sent

to the General Officer Commanding, China, in the sense

suggested in the last paragraph of the letter from the

War Office dated January 23rd.
